Tullian Tchividjian:
When you find imperatives in the Bible..those directives, those statements that tell us what we need to do, you need to search in the surrounding context for the indicative that grounds it. Because imperatives minus indicatives in the Christian life lead to impossibilities. And what I mean by that is if we focus only on what we must do without grounding and saturating what we must do in what God in Christ has already done, which is really the engine that powers us to do what God has called us to do, then we’ll quickly run out of steam, we’ll quickly conk out, we’ll quickly run out of gas.
